Spotlight Series : GAWP
At Evermix, we love discovering new sets and artists from all over the world and through our Spotlight Series, we focus on some of our favourites that have caught our eye, and ears, in the office! Last month we chatted with Nila all the way from New Zealand, and now we come a little closer to home to Leeds, where we sat down with GAWP. During this wee pick his brains on his musical journey so far, his plans for the year ahead and loads more! Check out the full interview below! -- Hi GAWP, thanks for sitting down with us, and congrats on being our latest Spotlight DJ in our Spotlight Series. For those who may not know you, please tell us who GAWP is in one sentence. Hey, thanks for letting me loose on the answers! I am a 36 year old guy, who chose to devote my life to music.. from running events, producing, performing and teaching. -- A little birdie told us that your name 'GAWP' originated from when you showed a track that you produced to a friend, and he sat there gawping at you ... surely you must get that a lot when sharing a track hot new from the studio? Yes, it’s something that you would think would happen a lot but usually no one gets to hear it in the studio so its normally an email with expressive typing which is nice. But yeah the real faces are usually the first time I play it at a gig.. And they can be real funny faces! -- And we have to ask ... what track of yours did you show to your friend? It was one called “Drainer" my first release on Main Course Records. -- You're also 1/2 of The Squatters ... can you tell us what made you begin the GAWP Project? Yes, The Squatters had a sound, So… GAWP was a Solo project and was just for fun then, but once I learnt there was no boundaries of having to sustain a sound, it didn’t matter if the records just stayed on my hard drive as it was just a hobby. So GAWP was born. -- Describe GAWP's musical style in 3 words Twisted, Experimental, House -- We've managed to catch you just before your 'Mind The Gawp' North American Tour, where you'll be heading all over the States, from San Francisco to Las Vegas to Detroit, you're see it all! How do you prepare for such a mammoth tour? Firstly, I’m just making sure I have all the right tech packed.. Evermix, Subpac, Laptop, Headphones, Gopro, DSLR etc.. and there might be some place for some fresh clothes. Then I guess the real prep was done making the tracks for the past year just ready to get them finished for the trip. Oh and the odd interview before my flight. -- You have releases on the mighty Dirtybird and This Ain't Bristol and are also being tipped as one of DJ Mag's 'Ones To Watch' in 2018, you're having quite a year so far, but can you share any other exciting plans for the rest of 2018? I’ve got various things in the pipeline but mainly the Sonic Academy 17 part tutorial on how I made my Dirtybird Release which is coming out on the Dirtybird Members Birdfeed, Then I have a Collab EP with Tough Love with a crazy lead Track called “Chicken Grease” and a few other things brewing with a label I’m working closely with. -- You've gained support from huge names such as Claude Vonstroke, Chris Lake, Erick Morillo to name just a few, but can you tell us, which producer you'd most like to collaborate in the studio with? Chris Lake or Kyle Watson -- And lastly, can we expect to hear more sets on evermix.fm soon? ;) Yes of course, I will be packing that bad boy in my case on the Tour. Good to hear GAWP, we’re looking forward to hearing those mixes, and good luck for the tour!
